2010 Volunteer of the Year!
The Greene Family
The Greene family has been a tremendous asset to the Daniel Boone Homestead in the last eight months. Jodi Greene-Kelly, her daughter Annie, her niece Tara, and her nephew Jared began volunteering at the Homestead in the early summer on Sundays. Jared quickly became our current blacksmith’s apprentice, and has since been making his own items to interpret to visitors. The girls began learning the necessary information about the Homestead and shadowing tours. Tara also started to research 18th century toys and games so she could help with this activity during special events. By late summer, Jodi, a previous Homestead intern, had brought her sister, Jill, to the site to volunteer. Jill quickly began learning about the Homestead and doing the necessary research to become a guide.
In addition to their weekly visits to the Homestead, these five individuals assisted staff with all our special events including Heritage Day, Boone Birthday Program, the Fall Lecture Series, and A Homestead Christmas. On Heritage Day, Annie and Tara helped with the 18th century toys and games and in the visitor center and gift shop. Jodi and Jill gave tours of the historic area and sold tickets at the gate. Jared helped Rusty in the blacksmith shop, greeting visitors and answering their questions about 18th century blacksmithing.
For the Christmas program, the ladies manned Santa’s Workshop and offered crafts and activities to children. Jodi and Jill also helped plan and set-up for many of these special events. Even though winter has set in, the family still volunteers their time every week, sometimes from their home. Jodi designed a poster on the Homestead and its yearly activities, and Jill developed a listing of emails for the Friends group, visitors, and other supporters of the Homestead. Additionally, Jodi, Jill, and Tara reorganized and inventoried the Homestead’s library. They also help with weekly cleaning of the visitor center, restrooms, Wayside Lodge, and the Boone House.
Jodi and Jill have assisted with grant searches and writing, as well as fundraising and marketing. Jodi and Jill are both history professors, and Jodi is also the Mayor of New Morgan Borough. We are so grateful they have found time in their busy schedules to donate to the Homestead.
This family’s passion for history shines through in everything they do for the Friends. The Daniel Boone Homestead is truly lucky to have the Greene Family. The many successes of the last several months would not have been possible without their help and support! The Friends are thrilled to nominate the Greene Family for volunteer of the year.
