Field Trips
Any school
group planning to visit the Homestead needs to schedule at least two
weeks in advance. To schedule a fieldtrip, please call,
610.582.4900 to reserve a date and time for your school. There are
admission costs for our programs and we can provide information when
you call. Once a date is reserved we will send out a confirmation
letter and some suggestions for pre and post activities for the
students. We also offer a twelve-minute video entitled “The Life and
Times of Daniel Boone” and it can be mailed to you prior to your
visit for students to view.
House Tour
The
guided house tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and highlights
rural life in 18th century Pennsylvania. Although much of the
original Boone House was altered by later 18th century owners, the
lifestyle of the Boones is discussed in detail. A history of the
Oley Valley of eastern Berks County is also provided. Both English
and German traditions are discussed during the tour. We suggest that
you plan to spend 2 hours on the site to tour the Boone House with a
guide, and afterwards walk around to see the other historic
buildings on your own.
Barn Tour
Tours of the
Homestead Barn are also offered and last 45 minutes as well. This
tour emphasizes the importance of animals, the location & structure
of barns, and a discussion of the crops raised on an 18th century
farm. The barn tour is one of the extra programs we offer. This tour
can be provided in addition to or exclusive of a house tour.
Hands-on Programs
Each
Spring, the staff offers the opportunity for interactive learning.
In a four hour program, students will participate in two hands-on
sessions, walk the historic area and take a tour of the Boone House.
The hands-on activities vary from year to year but often include
militia drilling, baking, food preservation, 18th century
lighting and quill pen writing. The activities are designed for a
class size of 20 to 25 students or less. We can accommodate two
classes per day. These programs are limited and it is best to
schedule these well in advance to ensure availability. Reservations
for each spring start after the first of the year. Teachers
interested in the program can contact the Homestead for a list and
descriptions of the hands on activities. *NEW*!!! – For
groups that are interested in a hands-on activity but have less
time, we offer a three hour program that includes a house tour with
one hands-on activity.
We have picnic
areas available and rest rooms are located in the Visitor Center.
There is a small gift shop and book store located in the Visitor
Center.
